Short Description
In old folklore, familiars were magical beings—helpers and protectors who often took the form of animals. They accompanied their humans and were so close to them that they became family.
The Familiars explores the protective forces we create within ourselves when uncertainty and personal vulnerability become too difficult to face alone. A solitary girl appears beside monumental feline beings whose imposing bodies contrast with their role as guardians. They become a protective boundary between her vulnerable inner self and the outside world. Across the series, their number, scale and gestures shift, transforming fear into closeness and inner tension into a lasting sense of safety. The monochrome, aged-paper aesthetic places these scenes between family portrait, memory and personal mythology.
Prompt Logic
The prompt logic was built around contrast: a solitary girl and monumental black feline guardians; vulnerability and strength; strangeness and care. I guided the AI toward a frontal, formal portrait composition, simplified monumental silhouettes, restrained gestures, a monochrome sepia palette, aged paper and delicate pencil-like rendering. The creatures needed to feel imposing but protective rather than threatening. Their number, scale, position and physical contact change across the series, allowing them to function as a visual metaphor for an inner protective structure.
Process
The series began with experiments in Midjourney, exploring how monumental animal-like figures could express protection rather than danger. I developed several compositions in which the relationship between the girl and the creatures gradually changed through scale, placement and gesture.
Selected images were refined with GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, upscaled with Krea Clarity and finished manually in Procreate. The main challenge was correcting small AI-generated inconsistencies in eyes, hands, repeated patterns and surface artifacts without losing the emotional intensity, aged-paper texture and imperfect quality of an old drawing.
