Short Description

The machine generates a face.
It assembles her from fragments — shards of mirror, echoes of sacred pigment, centuries of human longing encoded as data. She appears before us whole, luminous, unmistakably present.
But Zen asks a question the machine cannot answer: What was your original face, before your parents were born?
The mirror-cubes that form her reflect Buddhist imagery — figures of compassion painted in gold and crimson, prayers made visible over generations. Each shard contains a world. Together, they construct something that looks like a self.
It is not.
In Buddhist thought, samsara is the cycle of rebirth driven by attachment to the illusion of a permanent self. The engine does the same: it cycles through ten thousand training images, attaches weights, and produces the appearance of a soul. The process is ancient. The tool is new. The emptiness at the center is identical.
I made this image. I do not know who is in it.

Process

My practice is rooted in the persistent pursuit of fusion — not harmony, but the productive tension between irreconcilable visual languages.
The luminous precision of a contemporary rendered face and the flattened gold-ground spirituality of classical Japanese Buddhist painting do not naturally belong together. A human artist who attempts this union consciously tends to over-negotiate — softening edges, seeking compromise, betraying the very collision that makes the juxtaposition alive.
I work with AI because it does not flinch.
The model holds ten thousand contradictions simultaneously and generates from within that impossibility — without aesthetic anxiety, without the need to resolve. What emerges is not a compromise between old and new, sacred and synthetic. It is something that could not have been willed into existence by a single human mind operating within the boundaries of taste, training, and intention.
This is not an abandonment of artistic agency. It is a deliberate expansion of it — using the machine precisely where human cognition reaches its limit, and reclaiming authorship in the questions the image leaves unanswered.
