Short Description

That fall is the work. Nothing in between is grotesque — the light stays flat and commercial, the packaging stays competent, the barcode scans. The only thing that changes is quantity, and quantity is where care goes to die. One piece can be looked after. Nine pieces are a moulding run. A bin is a stock level.

I work behind a pharmacy counter. Most of my job is supply: check the code, check the stock, tell the person standing in front of me whether the thing they need is here today or not until Thursday. It is careful, decent work, and it runs on a language with no room in it for that person. Batches. Availability. Units. The language is not cruel. It is efficient, and efficiency has to stop seeing you before it can work.

On the back of the pack, in the small print where nobody reads, the origin field says HUMAN RECYCLED. Nobody at the company that printed it thought that was a strange thing to write.

Prompt Logic

One rule held across all four images: the photography never breaks character. No horror lighting, no distress, no irony in the camera. If the packaging is competent and the light is ordinary retail daylight, the viewer has to supply the horror themselves — and they will.

Process

The decision that made this work was refusing to make it look disturbing. Early versions had colder light and harder shadows and read as horror props: the image was telling you how to feel, and the idea died. Pulling the lighting back to ordinary retail daylight was the whole job.

After that, everything went into the packaging and into the sequence. The first image is the retail face — each part individually sealed, coded, hung on its own hook. The second turns a pack over, because the back is where the language is most bureaucratic and least defended: a spec table, a warning that it is not a toy, and an origin field. The third shows the same parts still attached to the injection-moulding runner they were made on, nine to a frame, gate stubs and all. The fourth shows where they end up: loose in bulk bins, sold by the kilogram, with a metal scoop resting in them.

Read in order, the quantity on the packaging counts upward — one piece, nine pieces, per kilogram — while the care counts down. That inversion is the piece.
