Timea Paál

Timea Paál is a Hungarian multidisciplinary artist based in Romania, working under the name The Artifictional. With a background in architecture, graphic design, and visual communication, her practice centers on generative AI and promptography as methods of visual inquiry rather than spectacle. Her work examines how perception misfires, how memory distorts, and how inner experience shapes what we see. She sees AI as an unparalleled medium for deeply personal self-discovery, wandering the inner architecture of thought and emotion through a tool that is both alien and strangely human. She currently serves as visual lead and character designer at a US-based production company, building cohesive visual languages for narrative projects.

Selection Approach

I work with these tools every day, so I can usually see where the model did the work and where the artist did. That is where I start. Polish is free now. Staying long enough to get past the first thing the tool hands you is not.

What I look for is whether the image came from somewhere. There is a difference between work made to be looked at and work made to find something out, and it shows. The second kind holds a feeling it does not explain.

I am also drawn to restraint over spectacle. Most AI work reaches for horror, drama, the loud surreal. I am more interested in the piece that puts something impossible on screen and does not announce it. A dream does not explain that its logic is wrong. It proceeds. That unbothered certainty stays with me longer than anything trying to shock me.

My questions:

  •  Did the artist steer, or accept what came back?
  • Does it hold a feeling without explaining it?
  • Is the strangeness earned, or decorative?
  • Is there a person here, or a genre?
