This image is a new version of an illustration I originally created for my AI-generated book AI-CE, where I reinterpret Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland through artificial intelligence. In the book, all the characters appear as hybrids with Alice, so this figure is both the Caterpillar and Alice at the same time. The image went through many iterations before reaching a convincing result, as AI often struggled to correctly represent the Caterpillar smoking a hookah while sitting on the mushroom. In this new version, created with Gemini after the original Midjourney experiments, I refined the structure of the hookah and the relationship between the character, the pipe, and the smoke.
This work is part of a long journey with Alice. It is the fourth time I have illustrated Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The first version was created with physical assemblages, the second with digital collages, the third using pieces from a game, and this fourth interpretation is created entirely with AI. I am also the president of the Lewis Carroll Society of Brazil, and my work often explores Alicedelia, metamorphosis, and hybrid identities.
The prompt was constructed through layered descriptions of anatomy, gesture, atmosphere, and environment, allowing the hybrid Caterpillar-Alice to emerge through many iterations and careful visual selection between intention and the unexpected possibilities revealed by AI.
