PELAGIA presents an imagined state of symbiosis – a portrait in which the boundaries between nature, adornment and identity begin to dissolve. As the organic forms come to dominate the portrait, they offer a subtle reminder that the natural world remains greater than our attempts to possess or reshape it.
The project began with an exploration of portraiture combined with the colours, textures and structures of marine life.
I was interested in creating imagined organic forms that felt biologically plausible but remained unfamiliar. Through iterative prompting and visual refinement, coral, anemone and other underwater references were allowed to merge with the visual language of fashion and portrait photography.
A central challenge was maintaining the presence of the portrait while allowing the organic structures to become increasingly exaggerated. I experimented with scale, texture, colour and composition, looking for a point at which the forms could no longer be read simply as accessories, yet the human figure remained quietly present within them.
