Selection Approach

I come from photography and from cinema before I came from AI. Twenty years building light on set, then a degree in Cinema and Vídeo, and years directing and shooting in fashion, taught me to look for control first, not spectacle. When I look at a piece, I am checking whether someone directed it, the way you direct a shot or a set, or whether someone just kept clicking generate until the model handed them something acceptable.
 
Good light is free now. So is a clean composition. What isn’t free is knowing where to put the camera, when to cut, when to let a frame sit a second longer than instinct says to, and knowing how to move between the different tools until you get the result you actually meant. That is still a director’s decision, not the model’s.
 
But knowing the platforms well is not the same as having an eye. That eye comes from years of studying light, framing, fashion, design, whatever the artist’s background is, long before these tools existed. The tool is fast now. The eye is still the artist’s, not the machine’s.
 
The piece that feels directed, not generated, and carries that eye behind it, gets my vote.
 
My questions:
  • Was this framed and lit by an eye, or handed over by the tool?
  • Does the camera move like it knows something, or like it’s guessing?
  • Is there restraint here, or is it reaching for effect?
  • Does this feel like it comes from years of visual study, or just from a well written prompt?
