Barbed Blue Bird is a surreal portrait examining the coexistence of vulnerability and strength. Through celestial imagery, metallic wings, and motifs of containment, the work invites viewers to consider the barriers, both external and self-imposed, that shape our lives.
The portrait was designed around the contrast between freedom and confinement. Bird imagery traditionally symbolizes flight and liberation, while barbed wire represents restriction, protection, and self-imposed boundaries. The composition centers the subject’s visible eye as a focal point of awareness and resilience, while metallic wing-like forms extend from the head, suggesting both the desire to transcend limitations and the structures that hold us in place. The monochromatic blue palette reinforces themes of melancholy, introspection, and transformation, creating a surreal visual narrative about identity, vulnerability, and strength.
My work typically begins with a story rather than an image. For Barbed Blue Bird, I explored themes of identity, protection, and the invisible barriers we carry through life. Through multiple rounds of concept development and refinement, I shaped the composition, symbolism, and color palette to support that narrative. Birds, wings, and barbed wire were intentionally combined to create visual tension between freedom and restraint, while the subject’s gaze serves as an anchor for the emotional tone of the piece.
